Erik Solheim is the former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme. Since 2020, Erik Solheim started chairing Treelion’s Global Advisory Council (GAC).

12th January, the GBA Development Forum (Guangzhou) & Vision China was held online. Erik Solheim, the former UN Environment Executive Director and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations; Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-Ngor, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong; Zhou Shuchun, a Standing Committee member of the CPPCC National Committee and the publisher and editor-in-chief of China Daily; and Guo Yonghang, the deputy mayor and acting mayor of Guangzhou delivered speeches.

The theme of this event is “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area in the New Era: Connectivity, Sharing, and Low-Carbon Development”. The event aims to thoroughly study Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, showcase the achievements of the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and help the development of the Greater Bay Area. It is sponsored by China Daily and undertaken by the Publicity Department of CPC Guangzhou Municipal Committee.

Erik Solheim pointed out that the achievements of the Greater Bay Area in the field of green transformation have taken the lead in the world. At present, China, the U.S., the EU and other major economies in the world are vigorously promoting green development, and the COP 26 UN Climate Change Conference has also made positive progress. It is especially critical that China and the U.S. jointly issue the Glasgow Declaration on jointly addressing climate change and environmental degradation.

The Greater Bay Area and Guangdong Province occupy an important position in the process of China’s green development and reform, and also play an important role in the process of deepening China’s opening to the outside world. The “Belt and Road Initiative International Green Development Coalition” (BRIGC) is very much looking forward to cooperating with the Greater Bay Area to jointly explore how to play the role of the “Belt and Road” initiative and promote the green transformation of developing countries.
